Review: The Platypus plusBottle™

When faced with the lengthy approaches and winding alpine routes of the John Muir Trail, a hard and inflexible water bottle will help keep you hydrated, but it also takes up valuable space while adding weight to your load. For our test team tackling the legendary route, the plusBottle™ from Platypus Hydration provided the perfect solution.

On Performance and Design…
80% lighter and more compact than an empty hard bottle of equal volume, the plusBottle proves the expression that less is more.   Of course, you don’t need to travel all 211 miles of the JMT to benefit from the versatility of the Platypus’ best bottle.

Whenever and wherever you’re looking to make the most out of limited space and storage opportunities, the plusBottle is an incredibly durable and versatile option that can keep up with your active lifestyle.  Roll it down to the size of a pack of cards, fill it up and reward yourself with a full liter of liquid refreshment.

Platypus’ new and improved film makes this bottle softer and more flexible than that of similar bottles, without sacrificing the durability outdoor enthusiasts should expect from their gear.  The bottle just feels great in your hand. In part that’s due to the film, but it’s also a result of the tapered mid-section design.

The plusBottle’s all-natural, silver-ion based anti-microbial lining (aka SlimeGuard™) keeps your water tasting as crisp and clean as a mountain spring.   And on days you want to add some flavor, it also ensures that you won’t be stuck with that same flavor for weeks on end.

For trekking and backpacking, one of the drawbacks of the flexible bottle design is that it is more difficult than a rigid water bottle to slide into the side pouches of your pack.  However, the integrated easy carry loop made it perfect for clipping to a carabiner and pack or holding in the crook of your finger.

For added versatility, Platypus lets allows you to attach different lids—even hydration tubes and accessories.  Over the course of our testing, the only quibble centered on the narrow opening which makes it more difficult to fill from field sources, or add ice for more urban-centric outings.

Bottom Line…
Whether you’re taking on the John Muir Trail, or making your way through another work week, the plusBottle™ from Platypus Hydration  offers durable versatility for an active lifestyle.
