The Business of Gear: Q&A with Northern Lites Snowshoes

posted by gumptiongear December 12, 2012 0 comments

At Gumption Gear we continually strive to provide our readers with in-depth, informative, and balanced reviews of the latest outdoor & adventure lifestyle products.  Towards those ends, our “Business of Gear” feature allows us a unique opportunity to talk with industry insiders and introduce you to the personalities, ideas and vision behind your favorite (or soon to be favorite) gear.

Today we bring you the story of  Northern Lites Snowshoes.  For 20 years Northern Lites has operated on a simple premise: Snowshoes should be built in a way that allows your mind to focus on your surroundings, not what’s on your feet.  We reached out to the Northern Lites team and asked them a few questions about the brand, its direction and goals.

Our thanks to the Northern Lites Snowshoes for making this Q&A session possible. Continue Reading

An Epic Story: Deep North

posted by gumptiongear December 7, 2012 0 comments

When Tommy Baynard, creator and executive producer of Flying Wild Alaska, suggested photographer Corey Rich put together a climbing expedition that could be featured on the show, Corey jumped at the chance.

The resulting documentary includes stunning photographs and video footage of the beautiful snow covered landscape  juxtaposed with the coverage of the demanding trek the climbers undertook.   Moreover, from our perspective it’s a story about gumption as Corey, videographer Dane Henry and four climbers traverse uncharted territory for a first ascent of one of the mountains located in Alaska’s Arrigetch Peaks, located in the Brooks Range, above the Arctic Circle.

Hydrapak E-Lite Hydration Vest

My dear old hydration pack, it’s time to be honest. We’ve logged thousands of miles together, seen dreary sunrises and stunning sunsets. Together we have slogged through deep mud and baked under the blazing sun.  There have been good times and bad, but now the time has come to start anew.  It’s not me, it’s you. Over the years, you’ve taken up too much space, your jostling and pronounced bouncing has put too much stress on my back and has taken its toll on my running form.

Did I mention that I’ve found someone new?  Yes, I’m not ashamed to admit that there’s a Hydrapak in my life now.  At the end of the day, I expect a lot in a relationship and the E-Lite vest is ready to meet those needs.  And in all fairness  my dear old pack, you simply can’t compete with the lightweight, sleek minimalist design of the E-Lite Vest.  You’ve been good, but the Hydrapak E-Lite Vest is better.
