Mission Accomplished Video: Red Bull Stratos & Felix Baumgartner World Record Free Fall

posted by gumptiongear October 19, 2012 0 comments

In a giant leap from more than 24 miles up, daredevil skydiver Felix Baumgartner, shattered the sound barrier Sunday while making the highest jump ever – a tumbling, death-defying plunge from a balloon to a safe landing in the New Mexico desert.

According to preliminary data, Baumgartner hit Mach 1.24, or 833.9 mph, and became the first person to reach supersonic speed without traveling in a jet or a spacecraft after hopping out of a capsule that had reached an altitude of 128,100 feet above the Earth. This video from Red Bull shows the journey… this might just be the most radical example of “gumption” ever undertaken.

Terra Nova Equipment: Bothy 2 Person Shelter

posted by gumptiongear October 18, 2012 0 comments

More than ever, a record number of Americans are enjoying the great outdoors.  Whether embarking on a simple day hike with the family, or tackling a 14,000 foot peak, it’s important to be ever mindful of the reality that outdoor adventure and risk are inextricably linked.

A wrong turn on the trail or a freakish twist of nature can result in a night exposed to the elements, or a day spent hunkered down waiting out a thunderstorm.  While there is no way to tell ahead of time when disaster will strike, or how bad it will be, we can, and should still be prepared.  Of course the difficulty with most “survival equipment” is that outside of the traditional pocket knife, not much comes in a convenient “carry around all day” form, this can be especially true in terms of shelter.  Traditionally, it hasn’t been practical to carry your shelter with yo.  However, when it comes to preparedness and survival the Terra Nova Equipment Bothy 2 Person Shelter from Sport Hansa LLC is changing the rules of the game.

“Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex… It takes a touch of genius — and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.”  ― E.F. Schumacher

Through a process of trial and error, most runners have discovered that existing hand-held hydration “solutions” on the market either hinder your running style, leave water inaccessible while running, or simply prove to be too bulky and uncomfortable on longer runs.   These realities were not lost on the minds at Salomon Running.  Following their tradition of technological advancement and innovation, Salomon’s new hydration solution, the Sense Hydro S-Lab Set, literally puts hydration in the palm of your hand.

Vasque Pendulum Trail Runner Review

posted by gumptiongear October 11, 2012 0 comments

You’ll look up and down streets. Look ’em over with care.
About some you will say, “I don’t choose to go there.”
With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you’re too smart to go down any not-so-good street.
– Dr. Suess

For those who prefer long miles along winding mountain trails threading through thick forested slopes to the monotony of city streets, Vasque’s latest addition to its quiver of technical trail shoes, the Pendulum, is ready to carry you in any direction you choose.

Within Two Worlds Time-Lapse Film

posted by gumptiongear October 5, 2012 0 comments

“Within Two Worlds depicts an alternate perspective by giving us the illusion of times movement, signifying a beginning and end within a world of constant contradiction. It appears you are traveling in the midst of a dream, half-sleeping, half-waking, and touching the arch connecting heaven and earth.”

Inspired while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), Brad Goldpaint shot this time-lapse film as a visual representation of how the night sky and landscapes co-exist within a world of contradictions.

Whether ambling through an autumn parking lot with a tray full of pumpkin lattes, or taking the route less traveled along the local fire trail, life is full of detours.  These aren’t necessarily moments that require highly technical or specialized footwear.  Instead they are life’s smaller adventures, slight detours along the way.
