Chaco Updraft Review

posted by gumptiongear July 3, 2012 0 comments

True, you may not plan on spending 40 years wandering the desert wilderness like the Isrealites, but you’ve still got big plans for your summer.  Whether tackling class IV rapids, searching for those elusive swimming holes or trekking through the narrow cobblestone alleys of old Europe, you want quality footwear that’s light, supportive and ready for adventure by land or sea.

Every bit as adventurous and trail worthy as your last pair of Chaco sandals, the Updraft offers a modern minimalist take on the classic Chaco sandal.  Lighter, leaner and more streamlined, the Updraft offers all-day comfort without compromising on performance.

Time Lapse Video: The Mountain

posted by gumptiongear June 29, 2012 0 comments

Last year, Norwegian landscape photographer Terje Sorgjerd trekked to El Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, and stayed awake for many, many nights to capture stunning time-lapse footage of the Milky Way galaxy. (See the video below.)

Sprawled out over the lush landscape, the stars seemed close enough to reach out and touch. The video, called The Mountain, was shot over seven days in which Sorgjerd stayed outside with his camera, and without a tent or sleeping bag.  You’ll be thankful for his efforts.

Injinji Performance Toesocks™ Review

posted by gumptiongear June 25, 2012 0 comments

“The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art.” – Leonardo da Vinci

The human foot has 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 19 muscles and tendons. The 52 bones in your feet make up about 25 percent of all the bones in your body.  Despite this intricate design, we’ve treated our feet and toes like clowns in a circus car.  Yet, for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts alike,  there’s nothing funny about the fact that the very nature of the traditional tube sock may work against your feet’s natural form and function.

Injinji Footwear offers patented Performance Toesocks™ that are designed to enable the human foot – from the heel to the five toes – to function naturally and efficiently inside a shoe.   The key design principle in the development of the Injinji toesock was to create the best possible interface allowing the entire foot to perform naturally and freely inside our shoes, just like being barefoot. On: The Cloudracer

A cloud is made of billows upon billows that look like clouds. As you come closer to a cloud you don’t get something smooth, but irregularities at a smaller scale – Benoit Mandelbrot

Not to be outdone by nature’s transformation of water vapor into billowing clouds of majesty, On has built a line of running shoes that includes an innovative “active sole” that echoes mother nature’s creativity and her no-nonsense utilitarian design.

With the addition of the Cloudracer, On is aiming to rain on the parade of racing shoes everywhere.

Time Lapse Tour of Yosemite National Park

posted by gumptiongear June 15, 2012 0 comments

“We are now in the mountains and they are in us, kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver, filling every pore and cell of us. Our flesh-and-bone tabernacle seems transparent as glass to the beauty about us, as if truly an inseparable part of it, thrilling with the air and trees, streams and rocks, in the waves of the sun,—a part of all nature, neither old nor young, sick nor well, but immortal.”
— John Muir from My First Summer in the Sierra (1911)

Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its spectacular granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, and Giant Sequoia groves.   Through the use of time-lapse photography combined with controlled-motion dollies, Sheldon Neill and Colin Delehanty have created a video that attempts to capture the grandeur and emotional presence of Yosemite National Park.  It seemed the perfect way to walk you into the weekend.

Lowa Men’s Khumbu II GTX Review

posted by gumptiongear June 4, 2012 0 comments

With towering snow-capped peaks, jagged, technical terrain and dramatic alpine landscapes, the Alps are one of the world’s most dramatic mountain ranges. It is here, in the shadows of this glorious mountain range that Lowa has spent nearly 90 years crafting authentic footwear that “walks the talk” when it comes to quality, performance and sustainability.

Part of Lowa’s “trekking series,” the Khumbu II GTX offers the body and soul of a backpacking boot in a lighter weight design with softer flex designed as an ideal choice for do-it-in-a-day excursions. In an effort to best test the claimed performance characteristics of the Khumbu II GTX, our review team decided to go medieval on these boots, subjecting it to the ancient system of justice: Trial by Ordeal.
